Saboteur is one of tree Rogue Specializations in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and is also the most varied of the trio. Inspired by the Lords of Fortune, this Specialization has a little bit of everything, and so you need the Skills to match. Whether it’s whipping out new invention, setting traps, or going in for the kill yourself, the Saboteur Rogue is the most action-oriented. However, they ditch Momentum almost entirely, as most of the best Abilities come with their own Cooldowns.

You might want to consult our guide on best early Skills for each type of Rogue, as this one is looking at more advanced Skills The Veilguard has to offer. That means five Skills once the Specialization is unlocked (you need to be level 20 and have a link to it on the Skill tree), as well as some broader skills. Saboteurs need to consider the Control and Sustain skills too, so we’ve picked out the five best from there. The Burst tree is on the opposite side, and thus has no links, making it not particularly useful. It also focuses on a different style of play.
Damage values are tied to Skills chosen. These were our numbers once we unlocked Rogue Specializations, and they grew over time.

Fortune’s Fury |

Fortune’s Turret |
1,544 Physical damage (Duration, Tool) |

Since the Saboteur Specialization is based on the Lords of Fortune, it’s all about swashbuckling and adventuring. That means there are a lot of tools in your belt that you can use to swing the battle in your favour, and so the skills here either offer additions to that, or they fit a combat approach based on full coverage of the battlefield. Where Veil Rangers attack from distance and Duelists get up close and personal, Saboteurs are everywhere at once.
The new Ultimate is a no brainer, essentially giving you a machine gun to whip out in the middle of combat. Likewise, a turret is incredible useful at dealing heavy damage and distracting enemies while you find the best vantage point. Thanks to this and other Tool abilities you’ll have picked up on the way to this Specialization, A Quick Fix is a huge boost to the turret. Then for when you get your hands dirty, A Messy Death is great for the clusters your Tools cause, while Inspired Takedowns are perfect for those moments you rush into the heat of things.
Bow-heavy Saboteurs may prefer Plague Arrow (that grants Necrosis for arrow kills) and Trick Shot (that causes every fifth arrow to explode for AoE damage) to A Messy Death and Inspired Takedowns first.
Best Control Skills For A Saboteur Rogue
Skill |
Benefit |
Bated Breath |
Charge your bow an additional level |
Traumatiize |
+15% extra Takedown damage |
Time Management |
Duration Abilities increased by 50% |
Precise Power |
Enhanced damage after hitting a Weakpoint |
Reeling Bolt |
147 Electricity damage (Projectile, Tool) |
The Control Tree is shared with the Veil Ranger Specialization, and that’s because both suit a more distant approach. Staying at the rear and surveying the action before launching a Tool or picking off the best shot from distance is an excellent strategy for the Saboteur Rogue who wants to live up to mischevious theivery Rogues are known for, even if Pilfer (the actual thievery Skill) is a Sustain Skill.
Bated Breath is just common sense with how often you’ll using your bows. Ditto Precise Power. And while you won’t be grabbing skills that boost Electricity like Veil Rangers do, Reeling Bolt is a good ace to have up your sleeve when there’s an elemental weakness you can exploit. It’s for this reason, as per our early Skills guide, all Rogues should have Rain of Decay in their arsenal. Then there’s Time Management, which complements the Duration Skills in the core Saboteur tree, and Traumatize goes perfectly with Inspired Takedowns and suits a more aggressive style of play.
Best Sustain Skills For A Saboteur Rogue
Skills |
Benefit |
Bulwark |
10% extra Physical resistance |
Tipped Arrowheads |
+2 Max Arrows |
Lightning Flask |
915 Electricity damage (Duration, Control) |
Leaping Shot |
Fires an exploding arrow after backwards dodge |
Improved Health |
100 extra Health |
The Sustain tree is also useful for the Duelist Rogue, but despite both styles using swordplay, they fight in such different ways that they’ll use it completely differently. While a Duelist can use it to favour the unique quirks of their playstyle, Saboteurs use it more as a generalist would, picking up some key buffs and using the Control tree for more personalised upgrades.
We see that in Bulwark and Improved Health, which just make you harder to kill. Tipped Arrowheads, despite its name, is just a standard numerical boost too. For much the same reason as Reeling Bolt, Lightning Flask makes sense and goes well with Duration boosting Skills. Then there’s Leaping Shot, which helps the more agile Saboteur move from hand to hand combat to bow domination from afar.
