Black Panther, Wakandan King

Black Panther, Wakandan King is the commander and best card in the deck. While putting a +1/+1 counter on a land doesn’t do anything to the land itself, Black Panther’s other ability lets you put those +1/+1 counters onto a creature while gaining you a ton of life and drawing you a card.

Black Panther doesn’t need to do anything to use its effect. Once it hits the battlefield, it can stay there without having to worry about attacking or even defending to amass counters. Since it has first strike, Black Panther is a great choice to give counters to as it makes it much better in combat.

Scute Swarm

You want to constantly have creatures hitting the battlefield, and Scute Swarm is one of the best ways to achieve this. Once you have six or more lands, you can keep making copies of Scute Swarm, which leads to even more copies being made.

Each copy of Scute Swarm has all the effects as the original. So if you have five copies of Scute Swarm, each one of them will trigger when one land enters, creating five more copies of Scute Swarm.

Scute Swarm not only helps Black Panther’s ability to trigger a ton of times but also helps to create a large battlefield of tokens to act as your line of defense. Unless the original Scute Swarm gets destroyed, once the tokens start getting made, short of a board wipe, you won’t lose access to Scute Swarm.

Halo Fountain

Halo Fountain acts as a way to generate tokens, draw cards, and as an alternate win condition. Since Black Panther is a token deck, amassing 15 creatures is fairly easy to accomplish. To win with Halo Fountain, you just have to invest five mana and untap 15 creatures.

The strength of Halo Fountain comes from the fact it gives your opponents something they have to deal with or risk losing to it. Halo Fountain isn’t necessary to win the game, and it acts as a solid “plan B” to the primary win condition of winning through traditional combat means.

Jacked Rabbit

Jacked Rabbit is one of the best cards to be putting +1/+1 counters on. It can already enter with multiple, and by putting +1/+1 counters from a land onto it, you can create a ton of 1/1 Rabbit tokens with just one attack.

Since Jacked Rabbit will have high stats, you won’t have to worry about it dying in combat. Even if it enters with its base power and toughness, Black Panther can toss on a ton of +1/+1 counters to keep your mana up for other forms of interaction since Black Panther’s ability can be done at instant speed.

Champion of Lambholt

Champion of Lambholt is a very useful tool to help reach your win condition of winning through combat. By giving Champion of Lambholt a ton of counters, all creatures with lower power will be unable to block all of your creatures, not just Champion of Lambholt.

You don’t even need to dedicate resources to giving Champion of Lambholt counters because it gives itself counters. The deck naturally creates a ton of creatures to trigger Black Panther, which will, in turn, also trigger Champion of Lambholt to make it easy to close out games with all of your creatures.

How To Play The Deck

A Black Panther, Wakandan King Commander deck is all about generating a ton of tokens while spreading +1/+1 counters to your lands and creatures. Cards that give extra counters are especially useful, such as Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales, and Primal Vigor.

Many cards will give extra counters, which will cause the lands to gain extra counters on Black Panther’s triggers. When you move the counters, these permanents that give extra counters will still give the extra counters, allowing you to double-up on the counters your creatures are getting.

There are a lot of token generates you want on the battlefield quickly, as these are your main ways to consistently trigger Black Panther. Maja, Bretagard Protector, Rampaging Baloths, and Scute Swarm all create tokens whenever a land enters, along with noncreature spells like Secure the Wastes, Raise the Alarm, and Hop to It being great generators.

While Black Panther can spread counters, so can other cards, so you don’t have to rely only on Black Panther for your +1/+1 counter needs. Aragorn and Arwen, Wed gives counters to your creatures when it attacks; Finneas, Ace Archer does the same but only for tokens while drawing you a card, and Byrke, Long Ear of the Law doubles the counters on creatures.

The primary win condition of the deck is winning through combat. This is achieved by spreading +1/+1 counters all around your creatures, doubling them to easily swing out at all of your opponents. Alternatively, you can win the game through the ability of Halo Fountain of untapping 15 creatures.

The biggest downside of the deck is the reliance on counters. While it doesn’t struggle to generate a battlefield presence, without counters to back it up, you’ll only have an army of 1/1 tokens, which aren’t going to be very damaging. Luckily, there are a ton of ways to start the counter engine, and thanks to ramp, you can get those important counter-granting permanents down quickly.
